Have you ever walked through any downtown area and noticed every coffee shop on every corner claiming to have the world’s best coffee? It starts to make you wonder - who should you believe?
It’s easy in this day in age to read between the lines, especially with the instant access of information at your fingertips. You can educate yourself about any product, service, or industry at a moments notice.
So I already know your coffee isn't the best because Google just gave me the real answer! But what sets brands, products, and services apart from the rest?
Think of it this way, when people ask you what you do for a living, how do you respond?
Do you respond by saying what you do or what you believe in?
Personally, I am in the water play industry specifically the splash pad market.
What is a splash pad? It’s simply an area with a non slip surface that sprays, showers, rains, mists, or shoots water to create an inviting recreational area for people to play and enjoy.
You’ve definitely seen splash pads at water parks, you’ve probably seen them in public commercial areas such as outdoor malls or hotels, and some of you may have even seen them installed at someone’s house.
Yes, people install them in their residential properties, mainly backyards! It’s actually a great substitute or addition for pools.
Going back to answering “what do you do” - question - the generic answer would go something like this: “We build and install Splash Pads for Residential Properties and Commercial Organizations at an affordable price”.
However, that’s generic. What if I told you that “XYZ” company was developed under the belief that children are everything. That kids are the inspiration behind “XYZ” company.
For anyone who has a child or has a close loved one who is a child then you understand the amount of sunshine and love they bring into your life.
Have you ever seen the look on a kids face when they see water spraying from the ground or out of a welcoming play area? If so do you recall the amount of excitement and laughter?
Did it make you wonder how something so simple can create so much fun and happiness between a group of kids, family or friends?
Those moments are the type of reminder why “XYZ” company shows up every day and the sole reason they’re in business doing what they do.
“XYZ” brand is my company - Play and Splash.
I can proudly say that I wake up every morning to go out in the world to not only create a joyous experience for kids but to continuously strive in improving this fun-loving industry.
I see the industry evolving. Evolving into a more interactive experience for children. The Play & Splash vision is to push the industry forward by innovation. How?
Let’s just say we experience life through our 5 senses. Life is full of visuals, aromas, touch, tastes and sounds that we unconsciously connect with emotion.
If an experience hits multiple senses, the stronger the memory that is created and the more likely we are to recall that moment which gave us the experience. This is our philosophy and how we approach innovating our products year in and year out.
But how does one go about finding the right vendor to install a Splash Pad?
If you do a quick google search, every company is preaching the same thing much in the sense as the example mentioned earlier about coffee shops claiming the “best coffee in the world”.
But in relation to the Water Play industry it’s all about “safety & affordability” as the common verbiage.
Our Approach to Safety
As in every industry some companies do things the right way and some do things the wrong way.
Don’t get me wrong some companies do really strive to make safe and affordable products but what is it about their process, product or service that promotes safety and affordability?
Take Play & Splash for example, our motto all comes down to the idea that we look out for your children the same way I look out for my own child. Your kids are our core. Our priority. So with our core beliefs it comes natural to make safety our most sensitive concern.
To understand Splash Pad safety, you have to understand the inherent risks. The main risk being proper filtration. Some cases have shown children who engage in Splash Pads raise the risk of running into contamination issues with play water which can ultimately make kids sick.
With that being said, the biggest problems to look out for and that I’ve seen with some service splash pads are clogged drains, dirty tanks and no instructions or maintenance schedules.
Personally, I do a few things to address these problems one of the which is building a per-filter box that catches larger debris which ultimately helps keep the tank pump and filter a lot cleaner with just one easy to service spot.
I believe communication is key. Something as small as clear instructions for customer’s to maintain or address problems if they arise.
I currently creating “DIY How To Basics for Splash Pad Safety & Maintenance” for my YouTube tube series that will help answer questions and save consumers money by doing small simple steps themselves.
As an installer it’s about taking the time to install things correctly the first time through such as pipelines and mastering the arrangement of the foundation instead of bypassing steps which ultimately leads to future problems down the road.
Our Approach to Affordability
In my opinion, affordability equals experience. Tell me how many mistakes you’ve gone through in developing your product, business, or what have you and I’ll tell you how affordable your product is.
Trial and error after trial and error leads to mastery.
Yes, I’ve gone through my fair share of mistakes but I’m fortunate to say I’ve never had any major setbacks. However I did get pretty close when I first started.
You know those type of situations where everything is going right and then all of a sudden one turn of event has potential to ruin everything you’ve worked?
Well I was in a similar predicament and not only that but in a situation where I can decide to either take the loss and fail which would ultimately hurt current and future business or start the job over and still meet the deadline.
I succeeded with all odds against me. It is something I hold special to my heart and look back on whenever I face an obstacle.
Ever since I started this industry back in 2005, I’ve gained a wealth of knowledge from water hydraulics to nozzles - what works, what doesn’t work, and the ins and outs of various pieces to effectively build a splash pad.
It’s those 8 years of experience as a division manager under another Splash Pad Installation company. It’s all those hours building portable splash pads on a smaller scale during my free time and the wealth of knowledge I acquired about water dynamics.
Those snippets of gold and knowledge have led to the application of principles on a larger scale.
At the end of the day, my mission is to make Splash Pads specifically Play & Splash a common house name because I truly believe that splash pads not only make your home a happier place but they also bring people together.
